The Blink of an EyeWe will blink our eyes 415 million times before we die. Each of those blinks represents a rapid unveiling of the world we call home. Most blinks reveal nothing surprising, as they happen so frequently.Other blinks end with fascination and interestthe visualization of beauty, history, comedy, love, wonder. And then there are the blinks we wish we could take back. The blinks we wish so fiercely to place in another time.More selfishly, upon another person.Sometimes we squeeze our eyes shut upon such blinks, perhaps thinking that a longer blink will empower us to change what we've seen. But the goodness of darkness is like most darkness; it fills our hearts with false hope until we at last shed some light on detrimental truths.Heart Beat, Eye BlinkMuch like the beating of our hearts, we take this most necessary function for granted. And like the beating of our hearts, our blinks sometimes take unfortunate avenues. When we blink in the direction of heartbreak, our heart and our eyes intersect at an eruption of catastrophe.Think about the last time your heart was broken.Whether it was something you heard or something you saw, you'll surely recall what you were looking at when it happened. And the little interruptions of darkness at that momentthose things we call blinkswill have been forgotten. And isn't it ironic? |

And the little interruptions of darkness at that momentthose things we call blinkswill have been forgotten. And isn't it ironic? The lifespan of the blink of an eye, nothing but a fraction of a second, is all it takes to break a heart. There's something of a build-up, of course. But when the moment is ripe and the scene has been processed, it will take just one more blink to solidify the tragedy upon us.My Worst BlinkOf all the many blinks I've had, my worst occurred as I was looking at my computer screen just over a year ago. And, in the blink of an eye, my world collapsed. The man I loved with someone else staring at me through a monitor.I squeezed my eyes shut and felt my face flush. |

I squeezed my eyes shut and felt my face flush.Truth would be postponed, if only for a moment.Blinking the Tears AwayAs easily as one blink will break your heart, you will commission the same function to help heal it.You will cry and your heart will melt, but every blink you take beyond that tragedy will bring you closer again to the happiness that was once so swiftly stolen away. When the time arrives, your eyes will meet another's.And in the blink of an eye, a beautiful new love will begin.A love to fascinate those little slices of darkness for at least another little while. That hope, which is one bred of conviction rather than denial, keeps me blinking for more than necessity. What's your most memorable blink?? -justin;)subscribe |
