Sticks and Stones
The Political Correctness debate is one that is hotly, and frequently, contested.I hear it on the radio, on the TV, on the internet, down the pub and, in fact, practically everywhere else. One slightly hypocritical aspect of PC that has frankly 'got on my wick' ('scuse the expression) is the accepted phrases to do with tall, slender people.Anyone using the word Fat, Large, Big or any similar phrase, in the public on these fair shores of ours will be jumped on like a ton (am I allowed to say that?)of bricks. So where along the line did being "A skinny, lanky, gangly, streak of piss," get missed out by the PC brigade?I use it in quotation as it was one that I had directed at me many times while I was a teenager. Now I know that kids are cruel but I've heard this from adults. |
Now I know that kids are cruel but I've heard this from adults. It's water off a ducks back nowadays but I can tell you that it hurt at the time because of the nasty context in which it was used.Kids are sensitive and taunting of this nature can be damaging.Same thing in sports.Peter Crouch, the Liverpool striker, is 1.98M in height. So it's, incorrectly, presumed that he's only good in the air.The fact that his touch, passing, ability to hold players off, positional sense and dribbling skills are practically as good as anyone in top level football is always overlooked. My best friends have commented "Don't like that Crouch - they always lump it up to him when he plays." |
My best friends have commented "Don't like that Crouch - they always lump it up to him when he plays."Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not proposing that anything change. There's enough stepping on eggshells nowadays without adding more phrases that people aren't allowed to use.I'm simply interested in what's behind why "Shortie" or "Fattie" are out of order but "Skinny, Lanky, Gangly," and the like are deemed acceptable.I'm thinking maybe society believes that "Ol' Skinny Malinky Long Legs" can take it.Lamp Post kid won't be offended.Or is it that the form of a tall, skinny person is a softer target and "Long shanks" is less attractive than his "Vertically Challenged," or "Rotund" cousins.Your views please? |
Your views please?Don't be shy - I'm really interested in what you've got to say. |
