As you all know by now, I usually try to examin the strange and the bizarre out there. So it shouldn't surprise you that yours truly would proudly present you with a blog devoted to nose picking. Now, I'm sure we all know how one goes about picking their nose, so we can skip the step-by-step instructions. We've all caught someone at sometime picking their nose. Some try to do it in secret.Others do it openly without embarrassment.Maybe you have been caught in the act.Nose picking is one disgusting habit and its certainly not socially accepted. So, are these people normal..?To find this out, researchers at a institution of higher learning, believe it or not did a study on nose picking. And published their findings in February of 1995 in the Journal of Psychiatry.Yes, you read it right - college professors being paid big bucks to find out who picks their nose.Researchers after a?tense and profound study came to the conclussion that picking one's nose can be related to an obsession of sorts. So, these researchers prepared a questionaire and randomly mailed it to 1000 residents.Of the 1000 surveys mailed out, only 254 were actually completed and returned to the researchers. Here are the results of the survey....- 8% claimed they have never picked their nose.(Another words these folks were either liars, or suffered from Alzheimers and could not remember doing it)
.- 91% stated that they had picked their nose in the past and were still actively practicing the habit.9% rated their pickin as more than average.25% actually picked their nose daily.22% do it 2 to 5 times a day and three admitted to doing it hourly.55% spent 1 to 5 minutes. |
55% spent 1 to 5 minutes.23% spent 5 to 15 minutes.0.8% (two people) spent 15 to 30 minutes each day cleaning their nostrils. One lone soul claims to devote over 2 hours each day to this ritual.18% reported nose bleeds, while 0.8% claimed perforation of the nasal septum from their nose picking.82% had picked their nose to unclog the nasal passage.66% did it to relieve discomfort and itchiness.35% did it out of personal hygiene.17% out of habit.2.1 % (5 people) admitted doing it soley out of enjoyment. And to know one's surprise, one perverted person picked his/her nose for sexual stimulation.65% used the index finger.20% used their pinky.16% used their thumb ( must have big nostrils)
90% disposed of the goop in a tissue.28% used the floor.7.6% stuck it on the furniture.8% of the respondents actually ate the end product. So, what have we all learned from this groundbreaking study ? First, we now have positive proof that picking one's nose is almost a universally practiced custom, although most won't admit it.Second, boogers apparently taste good, although I can assure you that I will never do the taste test to find out.And lastly, this must have been a very interesting scientific study, that of picking one's nose, sinnce researchers devoted money and time to such a serious research. So was the useful ? Useless ? I'll leave that for you to decide. |
